Biographical Record
Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld was born in Helsinki on November 18, 1832, into an illustrious Finnish scientific family. Earning his doctorate in mineralogy from the University of Helsinki, his radical pro-constitutional views provoked his exile by tsarist authorities to Sweden.
Nordenskiöld led multiple scientific expeditions to Spitsbergen and Greenland. In 1878–1879, aboard the expedition ship Vega, he accomplished the centuries-old navigational dream: completing the first transit of the Northeast Passage along the Siberian coast to the Bering Strait without losing a single man. Made a Baron by King Oscar II, his monumental cartographic collection is inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register.
