Archival Overview
Foremost Austrian Biedermeier novelist and painter whose exquisite nature prose and monumental novel 'Der Nachsommer' ('Indian Summer') celebrated moral harmony and cosmic order in nature.
Biographical Record
Adalbert Stifter was born on October 23, 1805, in Oberplan in the Bohemian Forest. Educated at the University of Vienna in jurisprudence and natural sciences, Stifter worked as a tutor and later served as regional school supervisor for Upper Austria, fighting for secular educational reform.
His novellas collected in Bunte Steine (Colored Stones, 1853), including the legendary alpine story 'Bergkristall', articulated his 'gentle law' (das sanfte Gesetz)—the philosophy that quiet natural forces are infinitely more powerful than sudden violent cataclysms. His 1857 masterpiece Der Nachsommer was praised by Friedrich Nietzsche as one of the few German prose works of timeless greatness.
