Biographical Record
Abel Nguéndé Goumba was born on September 18, 1926, in Grimari. Graduating in medicine from the Dakar Medical School, Goumba was chosen by founding father Barthélemy Boganda as his vice-president and designated political successor, serving as Prime Minister upon Boganda's tragic plane crash in March 1959.
Ousted by French-backed David Dacko, Goumba founded the Patriotic Front for Progress (FPP), enduring decades of prison, torture, and exile while working for the World Health Organization (WHO) across Africa. In 2003, he served again as Prime Minister and Vice-President, universally respected as an incorruptible defender of democracy and human rights until his death in 2009.
